Nail Specs (IRC R905.2.5 / Manufacturer Standards):
- Type: 11- or 12-gauge galvanized roofing nails (hot-dipped or electro-galvanized per ASTM F1667). Minimum 3/8" head diameter.
- Length: 1-1/4" minimum. Must penetrate 3/4" into the deck (1/2" OSB + 3/8" shingle/underlayment = 7/8" total; 1-1/4" nail leaves 3/8" penetration—insufficient). Use 1-1/2" nails to achieve code-required 3/4" penetration into the OSB.
- Coating: Hot-dipped galvanized (ASTM A153) preferred for corrosion resistance; electro-galvanized (ASTM F1667) acceptable if local code allows.
Quantity & Placement (IRC R905.2.6 / ARMA):
- Standard Slope (4:12 – 21:12): 4 nails per shingle (6 nails required in High Wind Zones per IRC R905.2.7.1 / ASCE 7).
- Steep Slope (>21:12) or High Wind: 6 nails per shingle.
- Placement: Drive nails 1" above the cutout (or per manufacturer's "nail line"), 1" from each end, and evenly spaced (approx. 6" o.c.). Nails must be flush-driven—not overdriven (cuts shingle) or underdriven (backs out).
Critical Notes:
- OSB Holding Power: 1/2" OSB has lower withdrawal resistance than plywood. 1-1/2" ring-shank nails significantly increase holding power—highly recommended.
- Manufacturer Instructions Trump Code: Always follow the specific shingle wrapper instructions (e.g., GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning). Some mandate 6 nails everywhere; some specify exact placement zones.
- High Wind: If in Exposure C/D or >110 mph wind zone (IRC Fig R301.2(4)A), 6 nails + asphalt plastic cement at rakes/eaves is standard.
