Clean, Flux, Heat, Fill, Wipe.
- Cut & Clean: Cut square with a tubing cutter. Ream ID to remove burrs. Clean OD of tube and ID of fitting with emery cloth or a fitting brush until bright copper shows. No oils, no oxidation.
- Flux: Apply thin, even coat of lead-free flux (ASTM B813) to both surfaces. Insert tube fully; twist slightly to spread flux.
- Heat: Use MAPP or propane. Heat the fitting hub, not the tube. Move flame around circumference. When flux bubbles/turns clear, touch solder to joint opposite the flame. If it melts and gets sucked in by capillary action, the joint is hot enough. Feed ~½"–¾" solder for ¾". Do not overheat (burns flux, causes voids).
- Wipe: While still hot (plastic range), wipe excess with a dry rag. Do not move joint until solid.
Water in the line? You cannot sweat a wet joint—steam prevents solder flow and creates pinholes.
- Best: Drain system fully. Open lowest fixture + highest vent. Blow out with compressed air if needed.
- Trick (White Bread): If a trickle remains, stuff white bread (no crust) 12–18" up the pipe. It absorbs water long enough to make the joint, then dissolves/flushes out at first use. Remove aerators downstream.
- Pro Tool: Use a jet swet / water-stop tool (rubber bladder on air hose) to block flow temporarily.
- Alternative: Push-fit (SharkBite) or press fittings (Viega ProPress) work on wet pipe. Check local code for concealed use.
Code: IPC 605.3 / UPC 705.3 — joints must be made per manufacturer instructions; flux and solder must meet ASTM B813/B32. Lead-free solder required for potable water (SDWA §1417).
