Horizontal Support Spacing (IPC 2021 / UPC 2021 / IRC 2021):
| Material / Size | Max Spacing | Key Code Ref (IPC/UPC) | Critical Notes | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | PVC DWV (1¼"–2") | 4 ft | IPC 308.5 / UPC 313.3 | 3 ft at end of branches/changes of direction. 3" + pipe: 10 ft (IPC) / 4 ft (UPC). | | Copper Tube (½") | 6 ft | IPC 308.5 / UPC 313.3 | Mid-span support required if >3 ft between supports (prevents sag). | | PEX (¾" CTS) | 32 in (2'–8") | IPC 308.5 / UPC 313.3 / ASTM F876 | Continuous support (channel/track) preferred. If discrete hangers: max 32". Support within 12" of fittings. | | Cast Iron (Hubless/No-Hub) | 5 ft (Typical) | IPC 308.5 / UPC 313.3 / CISPI 310 | Every joint (coupling) must be supported. 18" max from joint. Base of stacks: support at base & every floor. |
Universal Rules:
- Slope: PVC/CI require ¼"/ft (≤3") or ⅛"/ft (≥4"). Hangers must maintain grade.
- Fittings: Support within 12–18 in of every fitting, valve, or change of direction (all materials).
- Expansion: Copper/PEX need room for thermal movement—don’t anchor tight; use insulated clamps.
- Protection: PEX/Copper require plastic/insulated hangers (prevent abrasion/electrolysis). PVC/CI need wide-bearing hangers.
Verify local amendments: UPC often stricter on PVC/CI spacing (4 ft vs IPC 10 ft for 3"+). Always follow the strictest adopted code.
