Standpipe Height (IRC P3201.6 / UPC 804.1):
- Minimum: 18 inches above the trap weir (crown weir).
- Maximum: 42 inches above the trap weir.
- Practical Rule: Terminate the standpipe 30–36 inches above the finished floor. This typically places the outlet above the washer’s flood-level rim (preventing siphoning) while staying within code limits.
Trap Size (IRC P3201.7 / UPC 702.1):
- Required: 2-inch trap and drain piping.
- Note: 1½-inch traps are prohibited for clothes washers due to high discharge flow rates (typically 15–30 GPM).
Critical Installation Details:
- Standpipe Diameter: 2-inch minimum (Schedule 40 PVC/ABS).
- Trap Location: Must be 6–18 inches below the floor (or accessible via cleanout) per IRC P3201.6. Do not bury the trap in concrete without an access panel.
- Venting: Trap requires a vent within 5 ft (1½" trap) or 8 ft (2" trap) developed length (IRC P3105.1). Vent must be 1½-inch minimum.
- Air Gap: The washer drain hose must not be sealed into the standpipe. An air gap (loose fit) prevents siphoning and backflow contamination.
- Securing: Strap the standpipe to studs; discharge vibration causes movement and leaks.
Common Violation: Using a 1½" standpipe/trap or running the standpipe too short (<18" above trap), causing overflow during the pump-out cycle.
