Use a dielectric union at every copper-to-galvanized transition. This is required by code (IPC 605.17, UPC 605.16) to prevent galvanic corrosion caused by dissimilar metals in contact with water (electrolyte).
Correct Assembly Order (Galvanized side → Copper side):
- Galvanized pipe: Clean threads with a wire brush. Apply pipe dope (e.g., RectorSeal #5) or PTFE tape on the male threads only.
- Galvanized union nut: Thread onto galvanized pipe. Tighten with pipe wrenches.
- Dielectric union body (steel side): Thread into the union nut. Critical: Hold the union body with a wrench on its flats—never wrench the copper tailpiece or the plastic insulator will crack.
- Gasket/Insulator: Ensure the rubber gasket and plastic insulator sleeve are seated inside the union body.
- Copper tailpiece (brass): Slide the union nut (brass) over your copper pipe. Solder the tailpiece to the copper pipe before assembling the union. Clean, flux, solder, cool, wipe.
- Final Assembly: Slide the brass nut over the tailpiece, seat the tailpiece into the steel body against the gasket, and tighten the brass nut to the steel body. Two wrenches: one on the steel body flats, one on the brass nut.
Pro Tips:
- Dielectric nipples (short brass nipples with plastic liners) are acceptable for tight spots (water heater connections), but unions allow future disassembly.
- Grounding: The dielectric union breaks electrical continuity. You must install a bonding jumper (typically #6 AWG copper with listed clamps) across the union to maintain the electrical grounding path (NEC 250.104(A)).
- If the galvanized pipe is corroded/thread-damaged back to the tee, cut it back and transition at a sound fitting. Don't reuse compromised galvanized.
