Critical Rules for Both:
- Slope: Minimum 1/4" per foot (IPC 704.1 / UPC 708.1). Do not exceed the max length and maintain slope; if the run is long, you may need to upsize the pipe to keep the slope shallow enough to avoid siphonage, but the length limit is fixed by diameter.
- Fall Limit: The total fall (vertical drop) from the trap weir to the vent connection cannot exceed one pipe diameter (1.5" for lav, 2" for kitchen) (IPC 909.1 / UPC 909.1). This often limits the practical run shorter than the max length. Example: 1.5" pipe at 1/4"/ft slope hits 1.5" fall at 6 feet. Since max length is 3.5 ft, length governs. Example: 2" pipe at 1/4"/ft slope hits 2" fall at 8 feet. Since max length is 5 ft, length governs.
- Cleanout: Required at the base of the vertical stack or at the trap arm change of direction if the developed length exceeds the cleanout spacing requirements (typically 100 ft), but a cleanout at the trap is best practice for kitchen sinks.
- Vent Connection: Must be vertical or horizontal above the centerline of the pipe (IPC 905.3 / UPC 905.3). No "crown venting."
Pro Tip: If you need to go further, upsize the trap arm (e.g., run 2" for the lav) and use a reducing coupling at the trap. A 2" arm allows 5 ft. Always verify local amendments.
