Application temperature violation. Waterborne enamels require minimum 50°F surface, air, and product temperature during application and cure (typically 24–48 hrs). At 38–48°F:
- Coalescence failure: Resin particles cannot fuse into a continuous film. The "chalky, cracked mud" is unfused pigment/binder powder.
- Wipe-off: No film integrity exists; it’s essentially dried mud.
- Overnight freeze risk: 38°F garage likely dipped near dew point, causing condensation on cold doors, further disrupting cure.

- Manufacturer TDS (Technical Data Sheet) — always supersedes general rules.
Fix:
- Strip completely: Wipe/scrape off failed coat (comes off easy). Clean with TSP substitute, rinse, dry.
- Condition: Move doors inside conditioned space (≥65°F, 40–60% RH) for 24 hrs minimum before recoat.
- Heat garage: If must spray there, use indirect forced-air heater (no open flame) to hold ≥55°F on door surface (IR thermometer) for 48 hrs post-application.
- Verify product: Some "cold-temp" waterborne enamels (e.g., Sherwin-Williams ProClassic® Interior Waterbased Acrylic-Alkyd, Benjamin Moore Advance®) rate to 35°F — check TDS. If not rated, wait for heat.
Do not recoat over failed film. Adhesion will be zero.
