They waited too long to cut. On a 90°F day, a 4-inch slab poured at 3 p.m. likely reached initial set by 7–9 p.m. and developed significant tensile stress from thermal contraction and drying shrinkage overnight. Sawcutting at 9 a.m. the next day (18+ hours later) is far too late for hot weather.
ACI 302.1R-15 §5.2.3 and ACI 330R-08 §3.5 require joints to be cut as soon as the concrete can withstand the saw without raveling—typically 4–12 hours in hot weather, often the same evening. Early-entry saws (soff-cut) allow cutting at 1–4 hours.
What went wrong:
- Timing: 18-hour delay exceeded the critical window. Random cracks relieved the stress before the saw did.
- Spacing: 15-ft centers on 4-inch slab exceeds ACI 360R-10 §3.2.3 max panel ratio (1.5:1) and max spacing (24–36 × thickness = 8–12 ft). Panels should be ~10 ft square.
- Depth: Cuts must be ≥ T/4 = 1 inch deep (ACI 330R). Shallow cuts don’t control cracking.
Fix: You own the repair. Epoxy-inject the random cracks. Cut proper joints now (10-ft spacing, 1-in. depth) to define panels, but the aesthetic damage is done. Next time: schedule the saw crew for 8–10 p.m. same day or use early-entry saws by 6 p.m.
