Block coursing means stacking Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) so vertical joints stagger by at least ¼ block length (running bond). This distributes loads and resists cracking.
Standard Module: 8" high × 16" long (nominal). Actual: 7⅝" × 15⅝" with ⅜" mortar joints.
Your Wall Math:
- Height: 48" ÷ 8" = 6 courses exactly.
- Length: 240" ÷ 16" = 15 full blocks per course.
Layout Steps:
- Dry-lay first course on footing. Start with a full block at one corner. Run 15 full blocks. End hits corner perfectly (15 × 16" = 240").
- Second course: Start with a half block (8") at the same corner. Run 14 full blocks + 1 half block at far end. Vertical joints now centered on blocks below.
- Alternate full/half starts every course. Odd courses = full start; Even courses = half start.
- Corners: Build leads (corners) first—plumb, level, square. Use a story pole marked every 8" for course heights. Stretch mason’s line between leads for each course.
Code Checks (IRC/TMS 402):
- R606.3.1: Running bond requires ≥ ¼ overlap (4" min). Half-block start gives 8" overlap—compliant.
- R606.7: Max 4 ft unsupported height without lateral support. Your 4-ft wall needs top bond beam or roof diaphragm tie.
- R606.12: Grout cells with rebar per engineering (typ. #4 @ 24" or 48" o.c. vertical, bond beam horizontal).
Pro Tips:
- Cut half-blocks with a diamond blade; don’t hammer-split—uneven faces ruin bed joints.
- Butter head joints fully; furrow bed joints.
- Strike joints concave when thumbprint-hard.
If wall retains earth > 24" or carries point loads, get engineering.
