Vertical Steel Setup for Reinforced CMU Walls (Per TMS 402/602 / IBC)
1. Bar Placement & Spacing
- Place vertical bars in cell centers (not face shells). Use positioners (plastic chairs, wire ties to horizontal joint reinforcement) every 4 ft max vertically and at each course horizontally.
- Max spacing: Per design, but never exceed 48" o.c. (TMS 402 Sec. 6.2.3) or 96" for non-seismic (IBC 2101.2.1). Typical: 16", 24", 32", 48".
- Lap splices: Use Class B tension laps (TMS 402 Table 6.2.5.1). Min. lap = 1.3 × l<sub>d</sub>. For #5 Gr. 60 in 2000 psi grout: l<sub>d</sub> ≈ 24" → lap = 32" min. Stagger laps 24" min. apart.
2. Grout & Consolidation
- Grout: Fine grout (3/8" max agg.) for cells ≤ 4"; coarse grout (1/2" max) for larger. f'<sub>g</sub> ≥ f'<sub>m</sub> (min. 2000 psi).
- Pour height: ≤ 4 ft per lift (TMS 602 Art. 3.5 D). Consolidate with mechanical vibrator (10-15 sec) + re-rod after initial settlement. No "puddling."
3. Cleanouts & Inspection
- Cleanouts required at bottom of each pour > 4 ft high (TMS 602 Art. 3.5 C). Remove mortar droppings before grouting.
- Inspector must see: Bar position, lap lengths, clean cells, grout consistency (slump 8-11"), consolidation.
4. Critical Details
- Foundation dowels: Match wall bar size/spacing. Extend l<sub>d</sub> into footing + standard hook (90° + 12d<sub>b</sub>) or straight embed per design.
- Top of wall: Bars extend into bond beam or roof diaphragm connection. Hook or embed per design.
- Openings: Add trim bars (typically #5) at jambs, full height. Extend 24" min. past opening corners.
5. Common Failures
- Bars against face shells → reject.
- Laps too short or unstaggered → reject.
- No cleanouts / dirty cells → reject.
- Grout not consolidated → reject.
Pro Tip: Pre-assemble "cages" (verticals + horizontal joint reinforcement ties) on ground. Drop into clean cells. Saves time, ensures position.
If seismic Design Category D, E, F: Special boundary elements, tighter spacing, hoops at laps — requires SE/PE design. Don't wing it.
