What curing does: It maintains moisture and temperature so cement hydrates fully. Without it, surface water evaporates, hydration stops, and you get:
- 30–50% lower surface strength
- Dusting, crazing, plastic shrinkage cracks
- Poor abrasion/ freeze-thaw resistance
Minimum for residential (ACI 308R, IRC R402.2):
- Start ASAP — once bleed water sheen disappears and surface won’t mar (typically 1–2 hrs after finishing).
- Keep continuously wet ≥7 days (5 days min if Type III cement or >70°F). Methods: - Best: Ponding, wet burlap + plastic, or soaker hoses — continuous saturation. - Acceptable: Liquid membrane-forming compound (ASTM C309, Type 1 or 2) applied at ≥200 ft²/gal in two perpendicular coats. Reapply if rain/foot traffic disturbs it. - Avoid: Plastic sheeting alone (traps heat, causes discoloration, gaps let wind dry edges).
- Protect from extremes: >50°F and <90°F. Below 50°F → insulated blankets; above 90°F → evaporative retarder + extra water.
Common shortcut that fails: Spraying cure once and walking away. Membranes degrade; wind/sun eats moisture at edges. If you can’t wet-cure, use two heavy coats of C309 compound and check daily for 7 days.
Pro tip: Saw control joints at 4–12 hrs (sooner in heat), then immediately re-cure the cuts. Uncured joints = weak points.
Bottom line: 7 days wet or double-coated membrane. Less = callbacks.
