Critical Components for a 3-ft Segmental Wall (40-ft Run)
- Base (The Foundation) Material: 6" min. compacted ¾" crushed stone (no fines), not gravel/round rock. Extends 6" past block face/back. Compaction: Plate compact in 2" lifts to 95% Standard Proctor. Verify with hand tamper on trench walls. Level: Base must* be level front-to-back and side-to-side (±¼" over 10 ft). Use a laser level.
- Drainage (The #1 Failure Cause) Pipe: 4" perforated corrugated HDPE (sock-wrapped) or PVC (slotted holes down) at base elevation behind wall. Outlet: Daylight to surface every 30–50 ft (min. 2 outlets for 40 ft). Slope pipe 0.5–1%. Backfill: 12" min. width of ¾" clean stone behind blocks, full height. Separate from native soil with non-woven geotextile (4–6 oz)*.
- Geogrid Reinforcement (Required for Sloped Backfill) Why: 3-ft wall + slope = active pressure exceeds gravity wall capacity. IRC R404.4 / NCMA standards require grid. Spec: Biaxial (e.g., Miragrid 3XT, Stratagrid 200). Length = 0.6 x Wall Height (min. 4 ft). Place every 2nd course (12" vertical spacing). Install: Pull taut, shingle seams (no overlaps), stake. Backfill on top* of grid, not behind it.
- Block & Connection Units: Solid or hollow-core pinned/lipped blocks (ASTM C1372). Use manufacturer’s pins/clips—no landscape adhesive for structural courses. Batter: Setback per block design (typically ¾"–1" per course). Do not build plumb.
- Top & Surface Water Cap: Glue caps (concrete adhesive) with 1" overhang. Swale: Grade min. 5% slope away from wall top for 4+ ft. Direct roof runoff away (solid pipe).
Red Flags Requiring Engineer:
- Surcharge (driveway/structure) within 3 ft of top.
- Slope > 3:1 behind wall.
- Poor soils (clay, organics, high water table).
- Tiered walls (upper wall loads lower).
Permit: Likely required (>30"–48" exposed height per IRC R105.2). Submit cross-section with grid lengths.
