Visual & Physical Tests (No Tools):
- Footprint Test: Walk across the lawn. If footprints remain visible for >30–60 seconds (grass blades don't spring back), it’s drought-stressed. Water immediately.
- Color Shift: Healthy grass is vibrant green. Thirsty grass turns dull, bluish-gray or "smoky" before browning.
- Leaf Rolling/Folding: Blades fold or roll lengthwise to conserve moisture (common in fescue, bluegrass).
- Screwdriver Test: Push a 6–8" screwdriver into the soil. If it won't penetrate easily to the hilt (or meets hard resistance at 2–3"), the root zone is dry. This is the most reliable field check.
Tech/Tools:
- Soil Moisture Meter/Probe: $15–$30. Probe 4–6" deep in multiple zones. Target: "Moist" (not wet/dry).
- Smart Controller (Weather-Based/ET): Uses local weather data (evapotranspiration/ET) and soil type to auto-adjust run times. EPA WaterSense labeled controllers (e.g., Rachio, Hunter Hydrawise, Rain Bird ESP-TM2) pay back in 1–2 seasons via water savings. Many utilities offer rebates.
- Rain Sensor: Mandatory in many jurisdictions (e.g., FL Statute 373.62, CA Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance). Shuts system off during rain. Cheap ($20–$50) insurance.
Scheduling Strategy:
- Deep & Infrequent: 1–1.5" per week (incl. rain) in 1–2 cycles. Forces roots deep.
- Cycle & Soak: On slopes/clay, run 3x short cycles (e.g., 3x 5 min) 1 hr apart instead of 15 min straight. Prevents runoff.
- Water Early: 4–8 AM. Low wind/evaporation, foliage dries fast (reduces fungus).
Code/Pro Note: Many municipalities restrict days/times (e.g., odd/even addresses, no 10 AM–6 PM). Check local ordinance. If installing a smart controller or tapping main line for a flow sensor, hire a licensed irrigator (required in TX, FL, CA, others).
