Here's the proper technique for toe-nailing a stud to a plate:
Positioning:
- Place the stud flush against the plate, with the stud's bottom edge tight to the plate
- Angle the stud slightly (about 15°) away from your nailing side to account for the nail's path
Nailing pattern:
- Drive two nails at 30-45° angles through the stud into the plate
- Space them 2-3 inches apart vertically
- Nail from both sides of the stud if possible (four nails total)
Preventing splits:
- Use 16d common nails (3½") for standard 2x4 construction
- Pre-drill pilot holes slightly smaller than your nail shank if splitting occurs
- Drive nails smoothly—don't let them bind and twist
Keeping position:
- Hold the stud firmly with one hand while nailing
- Start each nail with a few taps to set the angle, then drive fully
- Check that the stud remains plumb before final nailing
Code note: IRC Section R602.3 requires studs to be secured to plates. Toe-nailing is acceptable when done properly, though metal connectors (like hurricane ties) provide superior uplift resistance where required by local seismic/wind codes.
Pro tip: If the stud keeps shifting, temporarily tack it with a single nail straight through the plate into the stud bottom, then remove it after the toe-nails are set.
