Diagnose head gasket without teardown:
- Block test (combustion leak test) – Most reliable. Remove radiator cap (cold), attach block tester, run engine at ~2000 RPM for 2-3 minutes. If fluid turns yellow, combustion gases are in the cooling system → head gasket breach.
- Compression test – Remove all plugs, disable ignition/fuel. Crank 5-6 revolutions. Dry vs. wet (add oil) readings: - Low cylinder(s) that improve with oil = worn rings. - Consistently low with no improvement = head gasket or valve issue. - Compare cylinders; >25% difference indicates problem.
- Coolant pressure test – Pressurize system to 15-16 psi (Subaru spec). Hold 10 minutes. Drop = external leak or internal (gasket).
- Oil inspection – Check dipstick and filler cap for mayonnaise (coolant in oil) or coolant in oil pan.
- Overflow bubbling – Confirms combustion gas entering cooling system (especially under load).
White smoke = coolant burning in combustion chamber. Combined with bubbling overflow and no external leak, head gasket failure is highly likely.
Subaru-specific note: 2.5L EJ engines are prone to head gasket failure between cylinders 2-3 or 3-4. Multi-layer gaskets (MLG) are common replacement.
If confirmed: Replace head gaskets (both sides recommended). Resurface heads if warped >0.05mm. Torque sequence critical – use new head bolts (torque-to-yield).
Safety: Pressurized cooling system and hot coolant are hazardous. Ensure engine is cold before removing radiator cap.
